The Walt Disney Company’s CEO Bob Iger spoke at a symposium last week stating that DVD and Blu-ray sales for the company were lower than expected.
Part of the low sales of Blu-ray discs is expected to be a result of people owning most of the Disney movies on Disney DVD already and not feeling the need to replace their DVD’s with Blu-ray discs.
What Disney DVD or Blu-ray’s have you purchased lately?

I picked up Snow White Blu-Ray/Diamond because Wal-Mart had it at $19.99 plus I had the $10 off coupon from Disney. Yes, I got it for $9.99.
Yeah, big surprise, and I was thinking the exact same thing. First, we buy the movies(especially older ones) on VHS. Now DVD comes along and we have to buy it again. What did the VHS cost? $20? Then the DVD for around $20? Oh, and let’s not forget the first round of Disney DVD’s shortly after the widespread acceptance of DVD, which weren’t so good. Or, what about the initial releases on DVD, followed a few years later by the “2 Disc Platimum set”(for example)?
Now we’re expected to cough it up again on BluRay? It begins to be hard to swallow after a while. At least Disney is bundling a DVD of the movie with the BluRay for many re-releases and in some cases some new releases.
Disney isn’t the only one doing this. I’m sure George Lucas is planning something major for Star Wars to come out on yet another format after the much-delayed release of Episodes 4-6 on DVD. Not to distract from Disney, but the “original theatrical release versions” of Episodes 4-6 on DVD were cut in a 16:9 aspect ration but in the 4:3 sizing, so you get not only letterboxing, but pillars as well! Wow, thanks for yanking me, Lucas!
The difference between BluRay and DVD is worth it, and if you have a 1080p display, you’ll see it too. It just gets kind of tiring these days with advancements in technology that it gives the appears that we, as consumers, are being nickeled and dimed to death. Disney just knows it has a more “loyal” customer base. Right now with the economy, people are going to stick with their standard definition DVD’s and wait for BluRay prices to drop.
Hey, that Chris Pickett character who posted earlier sounds very unhappy, and or confused. Why did you buy a blu ray player and 1080p TV, only to bellyache about upgrading to a better DVD resolution? If you can afford it, just move up to blu ray for the sakes of your kids, man! They’ll appreciate it, believe me. Sheesh!
and when the bluray sales slow down, theyll bring out another industry standard that has interactive camera angles or twelveteen channel sound or italic subtitles etc etc
