We thought that the plot of the movie was interesting. It was similar to Disney’s animated movie Wall-E in the sense that the film wanted us to stop and take a look at what our world could be turning into with all of the technology we are developing.
The point of the movie is that the more technology we have, the more afraid we will be of the world and take the world for granted. We will want to live our lives in an alternate reality that we will be able to create with the help of “Surrogates” or robots that look like us (or unlike us depending on how we design them to be). These surrogates will take the place of us in the outside world, and live our lives for us, while we control their actions and speech from the comfort of our own home.
The main character, Tom Greer (played by Bruce Willis) is an FBI agent who must investigate an unexpected death of a college student in a world where Surrogates who perished were not supposed to in turn kill their human counterparts.
Bruce’s Surrogate winds up hurt during the investigation and he must venture out into the world without his robot – feeling extremely vulnerable – to find out how this death could have happened.
We were intrigued by the plot, and found it hard to watch the real characters when they removed themselves from their surrogates. They all looked disheveled and depressed – yet they never seemed to think it was possible to live in the outside world as themselves because it was “too dangerous” even while the news stations reported that the crime rates were at an all-time low.
We thought that the movie was a bit long and that it ended very abruptly, however we did appreciate the message that it gave – to appreciate life and to be who you are, rather than try to live as someone else and hide your true self. We assume that the abrupt ending will lead to a sequel of the film.
We thought Bruce Willis did an amazing job along with the supporting actors in the film, including:
- Radha Mitchel
- Ving Rhames
- James Cromwell
- Rosamund Pike
Bonus Features on the Surrogates DVD include:
- Commentary with director Jonathan Mostow
- “I Will Not Bow” music video by Breaking Benjamin
Addition Bonus Features which can be found on the Blu-ray Disc include:
- A More Perfect You: The Science of Surrogates – The world of surrogates is not far away! Mind-controlled robotics is already in use in today. This featurette explores the realities of this technology and offers an in-depth look into the creation of the superhuman versions of the cast created for this film.
- Breaking the Frame: A Graphic Novel Comes to Life — A visual exploration of the evolution of Surrogates from graphic novel to major motion picture from the earliest designs and sketches. Pivotal sequences come to life in a dazzling 3-D animated experience.
