Kiki’s Delivery Service Special Edition DVD Review

March 3, 2010 |  by

Aww, we just finished watching a heart warming movie called “Kiki’s Delivery Service” on a special edition DVD. The DVD was released from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on March 2, 2010.

The movie, from Award Winning Directory Hayao Miyazaki, opens with a special introduction from John Lasseter, from Disney/Pixar’s Animation Studios.

Hayao Miyazaki directed the film Ponyo, which you can read our review of here.

The movie is about a thirteen year old witch named Kiki who must leave home to practice her magic for a year away from her family. Kiki is excited for her year away from home and leaves the first chance she can, with her pet cat Jiji (who can talk of course).

When a witch leaves home she must find a new town to live in, but there can only be one witch per town. Can Kiki find a town to reside in that doesn’t have any other witches? And a town with people in it that accept her for who she is?

When Kiki finally settles on a place she runs into some trouble with the local law enforcement, but after a young man saves her she is free to find a place to live – while the young boy continues to try to pursue her!

Kiki finds a nice bakery with a lovely woman working there who lets her stay in her extra bedroom. Kiki begins working at the bakery, that is until the woman realizes that Kiki can fly and would make for a perfect delivery girl. Kiki realizes that her powers are best spent helping others get their packages and treats to those they love as quickly as possible.

That is, until Kiki loses her magic powers and can’t fly anymore! She takes a vacation with a young women she met earlier in the film who lives in a cabin and paints. The young women tells Kiki that everyone loses passion and ability at certain points in their life, but they will always find the motivation to paint, or fly, again.

Kiki’s flying ability comes back to her when she realizes she must save the young boys life who likes her!

Voices in the film are done by:
- Kirsten Dunst (as Kiki)
- Janeane Garofalo
- Phil Hartman
- Debbie Reynolds

We think that the movie has a great moral and is fun for kids and adults of all ages. Everyone loves to watch movies about magic and this is a perfect animated film for that. The friendships that Kiki develops will bring a smile to your face and make you want to get up and help out your neighborhood in any way that you can – without complaint!

Even when things weren’t going Kiki’s way she made sure to help those around her, and even when she didn’t think she could fly anymore because her powers were gone she still went when she was called for a delivery.

While Kiki left home thinking that she would be the type of witch to make potions, she ended up only needing her heart and her ability to fly.

Watch the story for yourself on the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD, which includes the following bonus features:
