Disney’s Tron Legacy will be heading to theaters on December 17, 2010 – and not only will the movie be debuting in 3D, there are five sequences in the film which were shot in full HD IMAX aspect ratio.
This means that the sequences are shot with IMAX cameras, which films the action at the perfect aspect ratio for the IMAX screens, rather than with normal movies, which have to be stretched to fill the IMAX screens.

This entry is full of errors.
The phrase “full HD IMAX aspect ratio” is nonsensical. HD is 16:9 (=1.78:1) ratio, IMAX film is 3:4 (1.33). The selected scenes will simply be shown in the slightly taller 1.78 ratio, instead of 2:35, which is how the rest of the film was shot. In the new mini-IMAX digital theaters (which are not HD, but are roughly 1.78) they will fill the height of the screen. In real, classic IMAX film theaters, they will fill more of the screen, i.e., be slightly less letterboxed, than the rest of the movie.
Nothing in the film was shot with IMAX cameras.
And regular movies aren’t stretched to fill the IMAX screens. Depending on their shooting ratio, they have larger or smaller black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
Looks like this will be a good stab at filling the screen of an IMAX GT theatre. However the proposed aspection ratio for projection at such venues is 1.7:1. The actual aspect reatio of most true IMAX GT screens is 1.4:1 or thereabouts. Either way, I can’t wait!
