“New Man In Charge” Recap:
We open in present day at the Dharma Logistics Warehouse in Orote Peninsula, Guam. There are two men in Dharma jump suits that are packing boxes in a warehouse, fulfilling orders for the Dharma Initiative on our favorite LOST island.
The two men are interrupted when Benjamin Linus walks in and tells the men that he is from the home office and that the “new man in charge” sent him to tie up loose ends. Ben then hands the men money (a lot of money) and tells them they are free to go. He tells them that the Dharma Initiative hasn’t been around for 20 years, and the faxed lists they have been fulfilling for all these years are automated.
The men ask Ben for answers, so he will answer just one question per man. He begins by telling them that the packages they have been packing go to an island, and that the island moves so the coordinates are different every time they ship the packages. This answers the question about how Ben was able to survive on the island with the others even after the Dharma Initiative ended – the packages of food and supplies were still being delivered to the island.
Ben also talks about the polar bears on the island – showing the men a DVD about the Dharma Initiative, with everyone’s favorite Doctor, Dr. Pierre Chang.
Dr. Chang talks about the hybrid birds and other animals they are studying on the island – so now we know why the polar bears were on the island, they were part of an experiment!
Dr. Chang also talks about how the people taking care of the polar bears should make sure that they never get pregnant – as the electromagnetic forces on the island have a very bad effect on pregnancy on the island during the first trimester – so that’s why the women on the island were not able to have children.
Dr. Chang also discusses the “hostiles” on the island and shows the interrogation room with the giant video screen where the hostiles were given drugs and forced to watch hours of video in dream-like state. He also mentions Jacob as the “island deity.” Ben then leaves the two men.
Now we see Ben entering the Santa Rose Mental Institute – and we expect to see Hurley. Ben walks in and asks to see Keith Johnson, who turns out to be Walt! Walt is busy playing the game Connect Four when Ben walks in.
Walt asks if Ben is there to kidnap him again. Ben apologizes, saying he can’t change the past. Ben then says that he understands that Walt has been pretending to be someone that he isn’t. He says that Walt is special and that he has work to do – starting with helping his father, who is dead – and stuck on the island because he can’t move on. Ben asks Walt to come with him to the island, handing him a Dharma Initiative granola bar.
Walt and Ben leave the institute and head into the van from the island. And guess who’s in the back of the van? Hurley! Hurley tells Walt that he’s not crazy, but that he needs to get back to the island because that is where he belongs. But why? Hurley says he wants to talk to him about a job. We like the new in charge Hurley!
And then it ends. Did we learn anything big that we didn’t already know?
