“Practical Magic” TV Show On ABC Family Channel

October 31, 2010 |  by

The movie “Practical Magic,” starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, may be turned into a television show for the ABC Family Channel. The movie released to theaters in 1998. Below is the description of the film from IMDB:

“Sally and Gillian Owens have always known they were different. Raised by their aunts after their parents’ death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical–their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens’ sorcery also carries a price–some call it a curse: the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.”

Do you think the world is ready for another witch show on TV? We used to be huge fans of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Charmed” and would love to see this show made if it was anything like the two of those shows. What about you?

  1. I loved Charmed, the dark drama and sometimes comedy! And Sabrina was a light comedy, which was always fun! I wonder what direction they would go with it. If they choose the wrong one, people aren’t going to watch. It really depends what direction they go. With WWOP going off the air, that frees up a space for a comedy. And we all saw how well the Witches of Eastwick went, it went so fast off the air. And all of those vampire dramas are on now, and that is all magic and such.
I’m really curious how they will direct the show, and who would be the leading ladies. Either way, I’ll watch!!

  2. I would LOVE to see this if it’s done well with beautiful scenery/atmosphere and great acting like the movie. It would also be great if they kept the Wiccan vibe and didn’t go crazy with unrealistic magical powers like Charmed and other similar shows have. I could see actors like Rachel Bilson and maybe Rachelle Lefevre in the Owens sisters roles. I’m very excited to hear more about this possible show, as Practical Magic is one of my all-time favorite movies and I adore all things witchy.

  3. TV really needs a show with strong female leads, magic, romance and problems like charmed [which i am obsessed with]… it just seems there are no programmes like it and btw.. eastwick was an amazing show it was just at a bad time with no promotion. so stick that ABC!!!

  4. I would really love to see them take this show in a more realistic direction than Charmed was. Although I loved Charmed, I feel they really misrepresented Wicca on that show. I understand that they need to have some poetic license in order to make the show a success and appeal to their target audience, but I really think that a more balanced viewpoint would do that. Practical magic was about family, a family which happened to practice magick. As such, getting deeper into the hows and whys of the magick would be appropriate, not to mention stimulating for the audience. So few tv shows and movies have tried to bring in the true heart of witchcraft and/or Wicca (NOT the same thing, although they are portrayed as synonyms by most outside media) that this show could really carve a niche for itself in the marketplace by being fresh and new… while honoring the old. Of course embellishment should still be a part of the show as it is always fun to see things presented in a grand way and to simply wonder “what if.” I hope the producers find a solid practitioner to act as adviser.
