“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” stars Jay Baruchel, as Dave, and Nicolas Cage as Balthazar Blake. We loved how the movie laid out the back story so you knew how the powerful sorcerer Balthazar came to be in the situation he was in. We also liked how it was fate that brought Dave into Balthazar’s shop. After Balthazar gets trapped away from the world for a number of years he comes back to find Dave, since Dave is meant to be his apprentice.
We thought Nicolas played his character really well. He seemed slightly crazy, but you knew he was smart and knew what needed to be done to make Dave ready to battle one of the most powerful sorcerers out there! Jay also played his character extremely well. He always seems to be in the same type of “dorky” roles, and he has the acting for those roles down to a science.
The only thing we found a bit hard to believe in the movie is that even though Dave knew he could be a powerful sorcerer, he decided that training with Balthazar wasn’t as important as wooing a girl. We understand that Dave hadn’t had a girlfriend before and that that would be something very important to him, but we find it hard to believe he wouldn’t put it off for a couple weeks to finish his training, defeat the sorcerer, and live happily ever after with the girl.
We appreciated that Disney brought in the vibe of the original “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” from Disney’s “Fantasia” by including the scene where Dave has to clean up his workshop and tries to do so by casting a spell on the cleaning supplies. While it was great to be reminded of the classic Disney scene, it was a bit over the top in the new movie, and we can’t help but loving the Sorcerer Mickey Mouse “Fantasia” version better.
All in all we enjoyed this movie. We think both Nicolas and Jay were great casting choices and we thought the plot of the movie was interesting and definitely had us on the edge of our seats the entire time wondering if Dave would ever be ready to use his sorcerer skills. We highly recommend this movie for anyone who has a love of magic and fast-paced, exciting plots.
