The movie is a modern twist on the popular Romeo & Juliet story with James McAvoy voicing Gnomeo and Emily Blunt voicing Juliet. Gnomeo is part of the Blue gnome family while Juliet is part of the Red gnome family. Both families are in a fight with one another, constantly trying to outdo the other both in terms of their gardens and while racing lawnmowers!
Our favorite character in the movie was the plastic lawn flamingo named Featherstone who was voiced by Jim Cummings. Jim has done a ton of voice acting over the years, he voices Winnie The Pooh and Tigger as well as has voiced a bunch of Disney characters in the past, like Darkwing Duck and characters in “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers,” “DuckTales,” “The Lion King” and more! An interesting fact about the lawn flamingo…it was designed in 1957 by a man named Don Featherstone!
We liked the characters in the movie and found them easy to follow throughout the story, but for a movie so heavily promoted by Disney it seemed like it would have fit a bit of an older audience than we had assumed, although with it being released under the Touchstone Pictures name it might not have upset parents who took their kids to see the movie.
We thought that a lot of the movie seemed like a giant advertisement for Elton John, who served as Executive Producer on the project and who had his music littered throughout the film. While we love Elton, we wish some other music had been used.
All in all, we thought the movie was an interesting take on “Romeo & Juliet” with fun characters. The movie is better for older kids and had some really fun Elton John songs in it for viewers to dance and sing along with!
