Ok, as many of you know our favorite TV show of all time is “LOST,” so when FOX began airing previews for its new show “Terra Nova” we got really excited since the promos seemed to be a bit “LOST”-like. We tuned in last night for the 2-hour series premiere, and while we did find some similarities to “LOST” we had a little trouble getting into the show.
We appreciated the time travel element. We like that they started years in the future and that viewers got to see what the world was like before the main characters were transported back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth. We also like that we know the characters are living in a different timeline than the one they came from, but it seems like they are trying to find the proper timeline, for whatever reason. This plot line lends itself to a lot of flash backs, flash forwards, flash sideways, just like “LOST.”
In addition to this, we know that Commander Nathaniel Taylor’s son went missing from the back-in-time settlement years ago. He’s living somewhere out in the jungle – but not with “The Sixers,” which are obviously like “The Others” in “LOST.” But, we know his son isn’t missing for good, since at the end of the 2-hour season premiere we find out from The Sixers that Nathaniel’s son draws etchings on the stone walls out in the jungle with detailed math equations and pictures, which will most likely be extremely important to the story at a later date since they have to do with time travel and something that can’t be figured out by the settlers.
It’s also important to mention that Nathaniel was alone in the jungle for half a year before anyone else traveled back in time with him seven years ago to start the new settlement. There’s a lot he could know that he’s not sharing with anyone else. Nathaniel reminds us a bit of John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) from “LOST.” You want to like him, but you know there’s something going on with him so you can’t quite trust him.
The show seemed A LOT like “Jurassic Park,” which isn’t surprising since Steven Spielberg is one of the Executive Producers for the series. We’re a bit worried about the enormous budget that must have gone into making the show with all the special effects, since it seemed that the writing wasn’t 100% where it needed to be. We liked the plot line with the dinosaurs and the main family traveling back in time to lead a better life, but trying to set up love interests for the teen characters right away as well as all the father/son drama really made us think twice about tuning in again next week. Although, when the kids ventured outside of the compound and were repeatedly attacked by vicious dinosaurs, it makes us think that we might get our way and the cameras will stay inside the settlement walls for the next couple of episodes before someone dares to venture outside again.
All in all, the show has potential if certain aspects of what we saw in the premiere are focused on and others are toned down (please just let the father and son get along already!). We’d like to see a little more mystery, such as more drawings on the stone walls, or more mystery surrounding why The Sixers broke away from the colony, and we’d like to see some flashbacks to find out more about the future and the characters lives before they ended up millions of years in the past.
Did you watch “Terra Nova”? What did you think?
