Wow! The Walt Disney Company is buying George Lucas’ LucasFilm Ltd from George Lucas for $4.05 billion in a stock and cash agreement – with George taking $2 billion in cash and $2 billion in stocks until Disney can exchange the stocks for cash in a couple of years once it has made money off of the planned Disney-LucasFilm projects.

One of the projects includes a new Star Wars Movie (Episode 7) arriving in theaters in 2015. Then, episodes 8 and 9 will arrive over time and Disney has announced that it plans to release a new Star Wars movie every 2 years. Disney has also planned to create a number of Star Wars projects – including shows for Disney XD.

Along with the sale of LucasFilm Ltd, George Lucas has sold the rights to consumer product licensing as well as a number of his other subsidiaries including Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and more.

George plans to stay onboard as a consultant who will help behind-the-scenes of the Star Wars projects that Disney works on alongside the newly acquired LucasFilm Ltd.

Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in 2009 and Pixar Animation Studios for $7.4 billion in 2006. What do you think of Disney’s new deal to acquire LucasFilm Ltd and the rights to Star Wars?

Disney has had ties with Star Wars for years – including Star Wars themed merchandise at the Disney Parks and Disney Store, and there are Star Wars rides at the parks. There is also an Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, and we bet Disney will continue the Indiana Jones franchise soon! We can’t wait to see what else comes from Disney and LucasFilm Ltd in the future!
