Sacha Jafri “The Lion King” Elephant

May 6, 2010 |  by  |  No Comments

Artist Sacha Jafri designed a one-of-a-king hand-painted model elephant inspired by Disney’s musical “The Lion King.” The elephant will join 250 unique, life-size baby elephants as part of London’s biggest-ever public art event, “The Elephant Parade.” The event is designed to raise public awareness for the endangered Asian elephant and is put on by the Elephant Family charity.

The painted elephants appear around a number of London landmarks this month – the Lion King inspired elephant is on display in the Covent Garden piazza. On June 30th, 25 of the elephants will be auctioned off, with the money going to benefit UK conservation charities working in Asia.

Sacha said about The Lion King and the elephant:

I am inspired by the magical world of storytelling and adventure that is Disney; and in creating this work I wanted to pay homage to the bright and beautiful world of THE LION KING. As the stage show does, this piece aims to surprise the senses, to uplift the soul and seduce the spirit, to ignite and energise, to remind us of our dream world and to encourage us to adventure on beyond our world, to make the over-familiar magical again. I want the viewer to move around the elephant, to find different elements each time they look, to dip in and out of the magic and to realise their own story of child-hood, escapism, confrontation, responsibility and love.

Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Productions added:

I am delighted that THE LION KING is a part of London’s Elephant Parade – and especially thrilled to have renowned artist Sacha Jafri interpret the show with his inspired and energetic painting and its rich kaleidoscope of colour and storytelling. We are all immensely proud of Sacha’s achievement and hope the general public will enjoy his exciting work when they see THE LION KING elephant on display in Covent Garden.

New Exclusive Disney Line Of Animation Art From Courvoisier Galleries – Courvoisier Miniatures

February 5, 2010 |  by  |  No Comments

A new exclusive line of Disney Animation Artwork has just been announced from Courvoisier Galleries. The art company has released a new line called “Courvoisier Miniatures,” which are a unique line of Disney vintage-style animation art.

Courvoisier Galleries first introduced original Disney animation art to the world in 1937.

David Pacheco, Disney Master Artist and Art Director for the program, said about the new artwork: “The idea behind the new Courvoisier Miniatures program was to turn back the clock and rekindle the Disney flame of those bygone times and bring the techniques that personified Disney art in 1937 to a whole new generation. It has been more than 60 years since Disney produced artwork like Courvoisier Miniatures. Now Disney art devotees and collectors can not only acquire real handmade Disney fine art, but acquire it at an affordable price as well.”

Ron Star, Director of S/R Laboratories Animation Art Conservation Center in Westlake Village, California, where all of the Courvoisier Miniatures are made (and the site of the only animation art conservation center in the world), said: “This unique and exciting program of re-creating Disney art using original vintage materials and techniques was 15 years in the making. All the old methods and formulas now live at S/R Labs. Even our pen points are 50 years old, and are the same used to create the brilliant Disney art decades ago. We have been caring for and restoring Courvoisier artwork since 1976. I thought, what if we could create Disney artwork using all of the old magic, every bit of it, to bring back the special brilliance it had? Some years ago I went to the late Roy E. Disney and told him my idea. His response: If I could do what I’d described to him he would be thrilled. Somehow, I think he is. What I explained to Roy that day is exactly what we’re finally doing now—bringing real Disney art to a whole new generation.”

S/R Labs acquired the Courvoisier Galleries name in 1997.

S/R Lab Manager, Amelia Dodge said about the new collection: “Our paint library features over 15,000 different colors and hues, and our ImagiColor© paint system covers every Disney film era from the very beginning to the present day. To be honest, there isn’t anything Disney we haven’t been able to do!”

The image above of Snow White, titled “A Smile and A Song” was first revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo in September 2009. This past December Courvoisier Galleries released a piece titled “Winter Magic” with two Frost Fairies from Disney’s Fantasia.

Noka Aldoroty, Director of Disney Fine Art at Collections Editions, said about the Courvoisier Miniatures: “The galleries selected to represent Courvoisier Miniatures had to meet a strict set of guidelines in order to earn the opportunity to represent and sell this historically important, unique line of art.”

These Courvoisier Minatures are available exclusively through only 10 selected galleries and partners world-wide, 7 of which are in the United States.

Courvoisier Minatures are delicately hand inked, painted and embellished in the same tradition of the Walt Disney Company. Each piece is produced in extremely limited numbers and is 6.75″ x 8.5″ in size.
